Happy Holiday Trees Raffle & Silent Auction
November 14 - 21

The SAA staff and local artists have crafted more than a dozen uniquely themed holiday trees that will be raffled off! Each tree has been beautifully designed by artists, featuring handmade elements in a variety of media.
 
New this year: We have added gifts donated by artists from the Edwards Place Fine Art Fair, which will be included in a silent auction! A link to the raffle and silent auction will be available on November 14.

Heritage Exposed utilizes the artifacts dug from the grounds of Edwards Place to tell the story of the Edwards Family. Their trash offers great insights into their daily lives, habits, and preferences. Join us for this unique glimpse into nineteenth-century high-society living.

Statewide:  Illinois Artist Showcase
August 8 - August 30

The Statewide: Illinois Artist Showcase, which debuted in 2022, was originally created in response to the discontinuation of the professional art exhibit at the Illinois State Fair.  Open to artists age 21 and older, this showcase celebrates the diversity and creative talent throughout the state. From painting and sculpture to ceramics and mixed media, the work on view reflects the dynamic spirit of Illinois' art scene.

June 6 - July 30

A national juried exhibit exploring both classical and unique approaches to portraiture in two-dimensional art. ​Featuring a diverse range of styles and perspectives, the show highlights how artists interpret identity, presence, and expression.

Seeking an Upward Thermal
May 2 - 31

Artists Roberta Condon, Lorraine Ortner-Blake, and Debra Grall present an interactive exhibit highlighting the restorative qualities, symbolism, and fragility of birds through their interpretations in pastel, gouache, and beadwork sculpture.
​
Series: A Hollow-boned Muse:
Roberta Condon presents 20 figurative paintings in pastel allowing us to escape to the restorative and magical interplay of humans with birds.

Series: At Home with Birds:
Lorraine Ortner-Blake presents 20 paintings in gouache depicting birds as enshrined icons representing our natural liaison between earth and sky.

Series: Endangered Species II:
The Raven Cries Debra Grall presents 10 works in beaded sculpture portraying the Raven warning of past and future extinction of birds if we do not care for the earth.

Central Illinois Scholastic Competition
February 2 - 21​
The Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition showcases works by Gold Key and Silver Key recipients in the Mid-Central Illinois Region. The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, a non-profit organization, sponsors the Scholastic Art Awards Program, which recognizes the creative and talented youth. The Mid-Central region has been participating in this program for 40 years and has seen many young artists receive national recognition for their artistic endeavors.

Passage featuring John Hayes

This retrospective celebrates the diverse and impactful body of work created by renowned artist John Hayes. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a curated selection of Hayes' most significant pieces, showcasing his unique artistic vision and evolution over the years.

Pillsburied: Multiple Resurrections
September 6 - September 28
This show is the third in a series of art exhibits created from and about the ruins of the Pillsbury Mill factory in Springfield. The work includes depictions and interpretations of the abandoned factory, and sculptures and collages created from objects and materials found on site. In most cases, the subject matter focuses on the nature of the ruined built environment as it is today, and also the commercial and social legacies of the factory and its products in this community and in American culture in general. The exhibit also includes artworks rescued from the rubble of the Adams Street fire, where the preceding exhibit was mounted.
​
The exhibit is an invitational one, featuring the work of numerous area artists who have visited the site for inspiration. It was curated by Robert Mazrim, who has been harvesting and exhibiting the aesthetic potential of the Pillsbury brownfield reclamation project for the last year and a half. Art from the collapse of 20th century industrial America.

Statewide:  Illinois Artist Showcase
August 9 - August 31

The Statewide: Illinois Artist Showcase, which debuted in 2022, was originally created in response to the discontinuation of the professional art exhibit at the Illinois State Fair. This exhibit highlights the work of talented professional artists, aged 21 and above, who are living and working in Illinois.​

Baseball: A Watercolor Exhibit Featuring James Fiorentino & Rod Buffington
​July 12 - August 2
Step up to the plate and experience the beauty of baseball through a stunning collection of watercolor paintings featuring James Fiorentino and Rod Buffington. This exhibit, taking place in our MG Nelson Family Gallery, captures the essence of America's pastime with delicate brushstrokes and vibrant hues. From iconic stadiums to heroes of the game, each painting tells a story of passion, athleticism, and the timeless appeal of America's Pastime. Immerse yourself in the grace and energy of the sport as seen through the unique lens of watercolor art. Whether you're a die-hard fan or an art enthusiast, this exhibit will inspire and delight you.

Once and Again:  Alterations, by Susan Lenz
June 7 - July 6
Generally using needle and thread for self-expression, Susan Lenz works in her studio in Columbia, South Carolina to articulate the accumulated memory inherent in discarded things. She seeks a partnership with her materials, their purposes, values, and familiar associations. Memory, universal mortality, and personal legacy are central themes. 

Susan's work has appeared in national publications, numerous juried exhibitions, and at fine craft shows including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Smithsonian Craft Shows. She has been featured on art quilting television programs and on South Carolina Etv's Palmetto Scene. Her work is also in the permanent collection of the Textile Museum in Washington, DC and the McKissick Museum in South Carolina.

Sacred and Liturgical Art Exhibit
May 4 - May 31
The Sacred and Liturgical Art Exhibit at Springfield Art Association is part of the biennial interfaith Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield. It is a nationwide juried art exhibition. Liturgical arts are all the ways people connect with the Divine through creativity and beauty in the visual arts, in all mediums. The festival is inspired by the beautiful diversity of faith traditions within our own community. LAFS programs are accessible to those of any faith or none.

What Art Feels Like
April 5 - 27
At this exhibit you have the opportunity to touch the art that is on display.  This inclusive exhibition includes stone, ceramics, paper, fiber, painting, glass, wood and wall pieces created by artists from Illinois at California, Minnesota, Indiana, and Colorado that participants can experience through both touch and sound. The wall text and labels in the gallery are also accessible in a large-print version.

​It is suggested that you upload a free app for your phone called Seeing AI that will read the descriptions of the artworks. This allows an audio tour of the art pieces once the app is downloaded. Please use earphones to hear the descriptions so others in the gallery are not disturbed. Some headphones will be available or you can bring your own.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
February 3 - 23

The Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition showcases works by Gold Key and Silver Key recipients in the Mid-Central Illinois Region. The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, a non-profit organization, sponsors the Scholastic Art Awards Program, which recognizes the creative and talented youth. The Mid-Central region has been participating in this program for 40 years and has seen many young artists receive national recognition for their artistic endeavors. The Alliance receives over 340,000 submissions annually, and National Award recipients are celebrated annually at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The journey to New York and the national exhibition begin at the regional level. In 2023, the Mid-Central Illinois Region received seven National Awards.

​Dixon: 50 Years
January 12 - February 2

Dixon: 50 Years showcases Bob Dixon's artistic journey spanning five decades, highlighting his traditional construction approach, sculptural lines, and connection to China. The exhibit explores how Dixon's emotions and passions have influenced his work, creating aesthetically pleasing and emotionally engaging art.

Mauri Formigoni: A Career Retrospective

This show will display a wide array of work by Springfield artist, Mauri Formigoni. Formigoni was once a staple in the art scene of Springfield and is a former Sangamon State University professor. After leaving the area to travel to Mexico and beyond, Formigoni has returned to live in Springfield. She will be present at the opening reception.

Making Our History: Artists Render Lincoln's Legacies
August 11 - September 18
Over the past year, twenty Illinois artists have been in a virtual residency with the UIS Center for Lincoln Studies to create twenty original artworks on Lincoln’s legacies under the guidance of Professors Graham A. Peck and Brytton Bjorngaard. The art will be exhibited at UIS Visual Arts Gallery, the Springfield Art Association and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.  ​The exhibit will showcase original paintings, sculptures, prints, photography, virtual reality, conceptual and video art.

Dissonant Harmony:  A Life in Art featuring Sally Elliott
June 3 - July 9
Elliott is a Boulder-based painter with an illustrious career spanning over 4 decades.  She was a founding member of the Front Range Women in the Visual Arts in 1987.  She has been a visiting artist and lecturer at several colleges and universities across the Unites States.  From 1999 to 2011 Elliott was on the Drawing and Painting faculty at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and received professor of the year in 2006.

The SAA, in cooperation with Helping Hands Shelter, is proud to open this moving exhibition, which will be on display through January 24.
This portrait exhibition documents the stories, trials, and innovations for survival of homeless men of Springfield. At the reception, some of the artists who created the portraits will be discussing their experiences while working with the clients of the shelter.

In the spirit of the women’s movement that began in the late 1970’s in the United States, the exhibition will showcase work that reflects the evolution of the position of women in society and the arts from then, to today. A look at what has changed, what struggles still exist, and where we go from here.

A two-person fantasy art exhibition unfolds like a portal to a realm of imagination and mystery. Pam’s ethereal abstract figure paintings border on the edge of fantasy and reality, while Jason’s whimsical, yet elegant glass vessels form a 3-dimensional ambiance. Together their art creates a symphony of colors, shapes, and narratives that defy the constraints of reality.

Pleiades presents the bold strength of women artists in the 21st century. This exhibition highlights diverse voices expressed through pastel, acrylic, mixed media, oil, and charcoal in works large and small, realistic and abstract, and everything in between. Some pieces are bold and declarative; others are quiet, contemplative, and rooted in material exploration. All speak to the importance of honoring intuition, individuality, and the freedom to define one’s own creative path. Together, these works form a portrait of commitment to art, to self, and to the evolving landscape of feminism.

Confluence

Confluence showcases the collaborative work of Laura Anderson and Leslie Stalter, juried artists to the SAA Collective and educators at Lincoln Land Community College. United by a shared interest in the intersection of the natural and manufactured world, their work explores abstraction, metaphor, chaos, and control. This exhibition presents immersive pieces that blur boundaries between organic and manmade forms, inviting viewers into a space that feels both new and strangely familiar.

Summer Solstice is a bright and colorful exhibit featuring transparent watercolor paintings by Priscilla Kluge and handcrafted beaded jewelry by Shelly North. Priscilla’s recent work focuses on enlarged natural forms, echoing the style of Georgia O’Keeffe, while Shelly uses intricate weaving techniques to create detailed, textured jewelry. Together, their work captures the energy, light, and beauty of the season.

The Underground Gallery, located inside of the SAA Collective proudly presents figurative and other paintings by juried artist, Art Silver, Silver is inspired by how body language tells complex stories about who we are, what we are doing, and how we relate to our environment and each other. Most of his paintings relate to his expression of these moments.

Vibrancy Realized

Juried artists Sheri Ramsey and Michelle Ryan exhibit their pastel paintings and glass sculptures in the upcoming exhibition titled "Vibrancy Realized." Through the juxtaposition of muted and bright colors, the artworks are unified by their reflections on nature and the moody resonance of emotion, creating an experience full of energy and life.

Bonsai Society Pop-Up Exhibit

Join the SAA Collective as we partner with the Springfield Bonsai Society in a special pop-up exhibit featuring selected artworks by juried artists to serve as backdrops to seven beautiful and diverse bonsai trees. The Bonsai artists will gather for an artist talk at 6 PM.

This event is handicap accessible as it is displayed in our ground level featured gallery space and will not require stairs to access.
