Metals & Jewelry

Smith and Nickelson Metals Studio Requirements
While in the Smith and Nickelson Metals Studio, we ask that you always wear closed toed shoes. Do not use equipment that you have not been trained on, unless an instructor is present. Meghan Reese's classes will have supply kits available for purchase on the first day of class. Bob Ritz will provide you with information to purchase your own supplies from Rio Grande. Beginning Students

Intro to Metals and Jewelry 

8 WEEK CLASS. 3 Hours. Pick one time slot. [Meghan Tippy Reese]
This class will cover sawing & piercing, jump rings and wire techniques, soldering, making rings, dapping, riveting, surface and texture, forging, and beginning cabochon stone setting. Several projects will be completed in class.
Supplies: A silver package will be available for purchase (usually approximately $60) on the first day of class.

Torch Enameling

Tuesdays, February 7 - 28 [4 Weeks]: 11 AM - 2 PM [Judi Nystrom]
This class will have specific projects, primarily geared toward making jewelry. They will be completed in class using a torch fired method to enamel the components, which will be created using basic metal work techniques.
$110 Non- Members. $80 Members

Intermediate Students

Intermediate/Advanced Jewelry - Prong Setting 

8 WEEK CLASS. 3 Hours. Pick one time slot.[Meghan Tippy Reese] 
In this class we will design and hand fabricate prong settings for cabochon or faceted stones. Students will build on soldering skills and use a variety of hand tools and flex-shaft accessories to create custom settings for individual stones. Open to students who have completed an introductory metals course; basic soldering skills, hand tool and safety knowledge are required.
SUPPLIES: Students should have mechanical pencil, fine point sharpie, and optivisor or magnification as needed. Silver wire and rectangular strip will be our primary materials for construction.

Individualized Metal Casting

Tuesdays, January 10 - March 7 [9 WEEKS]: 6 - 9 PM [Bob Ritz]
Y
ou will learn the tools, history, and produce examples in broom cast, cuddle bone cast, and lost- wax cast. You will receive individual instruction and assistance with personal interests and objectives in casting, fabrication and jewelry. You decide what you would like to make and the instructor will help you achieve those goals. Age: 18+
SUPPLIES: You will be provided with information to purchase your own supplies from Rio Grande.

Metal Casting + Fabrication

Thursdays, January 12 - March 9 [9 WEEKS.]: 6 - 9 PM [Bob Ritz]
This class is for experienced and returning jewelry students. You will receive individual instruction and assistance with personal interests and objectives in casting, fabrication and jewelry. Intermediate and advanced techniques will vary with class interests. Age: 18+
