The Michael Victor II Art Library serves the Springfield Art Association as a hub of inspiration, research and programs. Students in our classes extend their learning with our technique books and magazines covering topics from ceramics and jewelry-making to drawing and painting with many processes in between. Kids in our summer art camps enjoy exploring our selection of children's books that engage their curiosity and creativity. In addition to its holdings, the library hosts the Molly Schlich Film Series, a huge fall book sale in conjuction with the Edwards Place Fine Art Fair, and the lunchtime Brown Bag Lecture series. Art History Happy Hour: Catching the Wave of Oceanic Art
Thursday, May 23, 5:30 PM
Join us in our first installment of Art History Happy Hour! Come enjoy a refreshment while Sheri Ramsey presents, "Catching the Wave of Oceanic Art." Oceanic Art has inspired artists like Klee and Picasso. Come see and hear what they were so excited about. Sheri will talk about where the styles originated, how they got to Oceania and what the Oceanic people did with it and why. She will concentrate on the art of the Sepik River tribes because of the quality of the art from there but will show art from other Oceanic areas as well. The presentation will contain subjects of religion and the art of the men's houses, body, cult figures, masks and everyday objects. Oceania's Melanesian art is "considered of the highest quality and should be ranked with that of the other great art producing areas of the world." Morton May
Our library consists of 3,500 books and DVDS on artists, art history, and materials. We are a part of SHARE, a collection of libraries in central and southern Illinois forming the largest automation consortium in the country.
