History Detectives, 6th Grade - Senior
$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
July 17 - 21, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30 PM, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. This camp will explore what it's like to be a historian. Campers will take field trips around the area to dive in with history and discover how life was lived in the past. They will get to meet historians and get hands-on with local sources. Springfield is filled with an exciting past, and this experience will give campers a behind-the-scenes view of that special history! Campers will get to experience tricks of the trade at Edwards Place, Oak Ridge Cemetery, Lincoln Library, UIS’s Sangamon Experience, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Drop off and pick up with be different each day, based on the location. |
Photography, 6th - 8th Grade
$160 Non- Members/$130 Non-Members. $130/$100 Members - for 4 Day Camp.
June 20 - 23, 2023: 9 AM - Noon or 1:30 - 4:30PM. (4 DAY CAMP. NO CAMP MONDAY.) or July 10 - 14: 9 AM - Noon. or July 17 - 21: 9 AM-Noon, Broadwell Building, 3rd Floor Photography Studio. Nearly everyone takes photos nowadays; most of whom wish they could take better images. In this course, students will be introduced to composition skills and techniques to help them take better photos while also learning about and how to use the camera. -- Please let us know if your camper would need accessibility accommodations. Must bring your own digital camera. |
A “Hole” Lot of Fun, 6th Grade - Senior $160/Non-Members. $130/Members
July 24 - 28, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30 PM, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. Campers can learn the few specific embroidery stitches commonly used on perforated paper --- an unusual material for sewing. Perforated paper is a special pierced heavy-weight paper more commonly used in the 1800s when it was extremely popular. Embroidery thread (floss) is sewn, not on fabric but on perforated paper instead. There will be a variety of projects from which to choose with varying levels of difficulty. Choices will include everything from holiday ornaments to gifts for friends and family. It will be possible to complete more than one project. |
Sew Easy (Beginner Sewing), 6th - Senior$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
July 10 - 14, 2023: 9 AM - Noon, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. Campers can learn to make colorful fabric "puzzles" using just a needle, fabric, and thread, like the “crazy quilts” from the 19th century. The secret of how the various colors and scrambled bits and pieces of fabric can be transformed into one rectangle will be theirs. Levels of difficulty will adjusted based on campers' sewing skills. Note: This is hand sewing, not machine. |
Sewing Upcycling, 6th Grade - Senior
$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
July 10 - 14, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30PM, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. Campers can learn about the uniquely American sewing tradition of pieced quilts. They can learn how to make their own pieced projects and also contribute a piece of their own needlework to the 2023 Edwards Place friendship quilt. The completed project will then be displayed in the Children's Parlor of the house until next year's camp session. Note: This is hand sewing, not machine. |
Bits and Baubles, 6th - 8th Grade
$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
July 17 - 21, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30 PM, Edwards Place. This is a history camp. They are soft, round, fuzzy, colorful, can be made in any almost size, and in the 18th century they were used in battle. What are they? Pom-poms! They adorned the soldiers' hats -- the color of the pom-pom on top of the hat indicated to which company the soldier belonged. Once the "how-to" is learned, campers can make their own pom-poms to add favorite colors to any ordinary stocking cap or create a whole zoo full of fuzzy yarn animals. |
Knitting Party, 6th - 8th Grade

June 12 - 16, 2023: 9:00 - Noon, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. This is a great opportunity to a learn how to knit without using knitting needles. Campers will have options from a number of possible project to complete during the week of camp --- all using the cording they knit. |
Write On! 6th - 8th Grade$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
July 24 - 28, 2023: 9AM - NOON, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. This camp is based on exploration of calligraphy (the art of beautiful handwriting), often used during the 19th century. Students will learn how to write using the Chancery Cursive “hand” and will also explore the tradition of illuminated manuscript (handwritten pages with painted images including precious metals). |
Suffolk Puffs, 6th - Senior
$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
June 26 - 30, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30 PM, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. Campers may have called these bits of fabric "yo-yos" but they began hundreds of years ago being called "Suffolk Puffs." (They probably originated in the United Kingdom; the first written record of them is in the early 1600's.) With a needle, thread, and scraps of fabric, campers can learn to make everything from clever fabric flowers to colorful pillow covers to cuddly toys. Note: This is hand sewing, not machine. |
Stained Glass, 6th - 8th Grade

July 24 - 28. 2023: 9 AM - Noon, Baima Glass Studio. In this course campers will learn how to make a stained glass suncatcher. Using the copper foil technique, campers will learn how to cut glass, grind, foil, and solder a stained glass window. Pattern production, tools, and glass selection will be discussed. |
Pendants, 6th - 8th Grade
$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
June 26 - 30, 2023: 9AM - Noon, Smith and Nickelson Metals Studio. Media: Metals Jump into metalsmithing with this crash course in small decorative pieces, and traditional jewelry pendants. You’ll learn how to use the tools and equipment to construct these pieces. You will finish pieces off with a patina polish to keep them shining long after you leave camp. |

June 5 - 9. 2023: 1:30 - 4:30 PM, Mixed Media Studio. Media: Book Arts, Mixed Media, Drawing, Printmaking This camp will be an exploration into printmaking. Campers will design and create their own block prints. Printmaking is an artistic process based on the principle of transferring images from one surface onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. You will create multiples in a multiple ways from lino cuts, collagraphs, and more! |

June 12 -16, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30 PM, Mixed Media Studio Media: Papermaking Roll up your sleeves and prepare to get wet while making sheets of paper from cotton, abaca, and kozo fibers. After we make the paper, we will make a book and a print. |
Rings!, 6th - 8th Grade
$130/$100 Members - for 4 Day Camp.
June 20 - 23, 2023: 9AM - Noon or 1:30 - 4:30PM , Smith and Nickelson Metals Studio. (This is a 4 DAY camp. There is no camp on Monday.) Media: Metals We are talking rings!!! You will learn the ins and outs of constructing / fabricating metal ring styles. Some will be in copper, some may be in silver depending on skill development. |
A Stitch in Time (Beginner Embroidery), 6th - Senior $130/Non-Members. $100/Members
June 20 - 23, 2023: 9AM - NOON, Edwards Place. (This is a 4 DAY camp. There is no camp on Monday.) This is a History Camp. Campers can learn six or more "sweet" embroidery stitches while working on a honeycomb printed fabric. When the embroidery work is complete, the sampler can be framed for hanging, added as an embellishment to another object such as a throw pillow, or lined and stitched to make a small bag to carry sewing tools or other treasures. Busy bees can add more stitches to their sampler |
Cooking Up History, 6th Grade - Senior
$160/Non-Members. $130/Members
June 26 - 30, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30PM and July 10 - 14, 2023: 1:30 - 4:30PM, Edwards Place. This is a History Camp. Campers will learn about some typical 19th century meals from actual Edwards family recipes, while getting the opportunity to try their hand at cooking them! By the end of the week, campers will gain knowledge of cooking skills, can try their own creations, and get to take home recipes from the camp to try at home. Campers will have the opportunity to eat their creations each day, so they will only want a light lunch before attending! |
Comic Drawing, 6th - 8th Grade

July 10 - 14. 2023: 9 AM - Noon, Mixed Media Studio. [Richard Kohlrus]. Media: Comic Drawing Campers will create their own comic character, story line, drawing, and inking of a book. They will focus on how to have a complete composition of storyline and movement throughout the frames while depicting motion and emotion. |
Wheel Throwing, 6th - 8th Grade

June 26 - 30, 2023: 9 AM - Noon or July 17 - 21, 2023: 9 AM - Noon, Prairie Earth + Fire Ceramics Studio. Media: Ceramics, Wheel Throwing In this camp, your camper will tackle the wheel. They will create pieces of all shapes and sizes on the wheel. It is a traditional wheel throwing class to become familiar with pottery and glazing techniques. |
