Downtown Springfield Inc. (DSI), in partnership with the City of Springfield and the Springfield Art Association (SAA), seeks an artist or artist team to complete a mural in Downtown Springfield with the theme of “Optimism.” The Mayor of Springfield, the Honorable Jim Langfelder, has declared 2018, which is also the Illinois Bicentennial Year, to be the “Year of Optimism.” The mural is to be completed during the summer of 2018 and will be a part of DSI’s ongoing public art /business district enhancement program called ARTification. This mural is also an Illinois Bicentennial project sponsored by the City of Springfield Mayor’s Office.
 
Artists will be encouraged to propose artwork that brings vibrancy and color to our downtown, speaks to the location, and addresses the theme, Optimism. Proposals do not need to be representational in nature. Artists are encouraged to design with a short painting window in mind. Selected muralists must be able to execute their design in a 1-2 week span during the summer of 2018.
 
Location:     Frankie’s Brewhaus
                       Washington between 6th & 7th, West Wall
 
Artist Stipend: $3500
Paint will be supplied by the project committee.
The artist is responsible for cost of all tools.
 
Artist Eligibility:
  1. Applications will be accepted from artists or artist teams within a 50 mile radius of Springfield, Illinois. However, priority will be given to artists residing within the Springfield city limits.
  2. Artists must be at least 18 years old.
  3. Must be willing and able to work on a lift or scaffolding.
 
Selection: Designs will be chosen by a panel selected by DSI including representatives from DSI, SAA, The City of Springfield, and the building owner.
 
Artwork/artists will be selected based on:
  1. Design.
  2. Ability to complete the project in 1 – 2 weeks.
  3. Experience with mural projects (not required but may be a factor in final decision).
  4. References, which will be contacted for all short-listed artists prior to presentation to the City of Springfield and the Building Owner.
  
City of Springfield Responsibility:
  • Final approval on the artwork design in partnership with the building owner.
  • Access to electrical near the work site.
  • Any necessary road/sidewalk closures.
  • Free parking spot for artist(s) during project.

DSI Responsibility:
  • Access to equipment such as ladders etc if needed.
  • Mural professionals who can support artists in wall prep if needed.
  • Material and equipment acquisition.
  • Overall support of project.
 
Building Owner Responsibility:
  • Financial commitment of a $1,000 match.
  • Final approval on the artwork design in consultation with the City of Springfield.
  • Completion of any required maintenance to the surface required prior to mural execution, to ensure longer life of mural
  • Access to the painting location
 
Artists will provide and is responsible for:
  • Painting tools
  • Personal Liability Insurance while working
  • Artist will be 100% responsible for the design and completion of the mural including priming and sealing the mural
 
Interested artist must provide the following information no later than by June 30, 2018:
  • A full color preliminary concept drawing in Jpeg or PDF format
  • A single PDF or Word document containing the following
    • Contact information including name, address, phone, email , and website (if applicable)
    • Narrative conveying the artistic intent, colors, style of work, etc. not to exceed 1 page
    • Timetable for completion of the mural.
    • Artist CV/Resumé (if available)
    • Artist statement (if available)
    • 3 References
    • Examples of artist prior public art projects noting location (if available).
    • Examples of artist other works (up to 5)
  • Document files should include the artists full name
