Historic Edwards Place Exterior Restoration
Built in 1833, remodeled in 1857, and home to the Springfield Art Association in 1913; Edwards Place has served as the Edwards family residence and center of Springfield's social scene, art gallery and classroom space, and now as a historic house museum. The exterior renovation of Edwards Place began last summer with rebuilding and painting 10 of the 36 windows. The custom-built storm windows for those windows have been ordered. Work on the remaining windows and tuck pointing will begin in May. The last phase will be to repaint the entire house, returning it to the historically correct tan color. |

Raku Patio Awning - FUNDED!
Raku is an ancient Japanese firing technique in the ceramic medium. While the technique is popular with our students (see Horsehair Raku Vase by Danny Brikshavana, left) in the Prairie Earth and Fire Ceramics Studio, the raku kilns are not easily accessible. Raku firings must happen outdoors, due to their firey and smokey nature, and the SAA does not have a proper outdoor facility to fire in all weather, while keeping the kilns protected. The creation of a permanent outdoor firing space for this type of ceramic process has long been a dream for the SAA School of Art and a concrete patio was included in the Centennial Capital Campaign plans during the 3D studio construction. Creating the proper cover for the raku equipment will allow our ceramics instructors and students to explore this process even further. A permanent raku firing space would be the only one of its kind in the area; a unique and very valuable resource for the entire community. |
Computer Upgrades - FUNDED!
The SAA Staff have been using PCs that are on average, 15 years old! Having five new computers will provide a more efficient experience, for not only our staff, but also our customers! Upgraded technology is also crucial for the sharing of information across multiple locations, as the SAA continues to expand. |
Front Office Remodel - FUNDED!
We will be remodeling our front office where guests enter the SAA! We hope to create a more modern-looking, welcoming space for our guests. That means the library is moving! We will be converting a new space in the Broadwell building for the library, which will still be open to the public. Once the books have moved, the space at main campus will need a face lift to be used as additional exhibition and event space. |
Edwards Place Landscaping Upgrade - FUNDED!
The final piece of the Edwards Place Exterior Restoration is to procure two period-appropriate planters and upgrade the landscaping across the front and west sides of the house. The committee has chosen the perfect planters and all added plants will be appropriate to the mid-nineteenth century. |
