Mary Corrigan Stjern - Pastel
The beauty of life inspires my artwork. Each day is an adventure to view the ever changing details of nature and the lovely people and things that surround me. If I do not have art materials in hand, I visualize doing art of a scene in an appealing composition, focusing on the colors, values, shapes, and lines in their relationship to one another. I even think about which pastels I might use. When actually creating art, I keep these ideas in mind. I often use vacation or day trip reference photographs from various outdoor activities enjoyed with my husband as subjects for my artwork. To capture the inspiration and emotion of the moment in art to share with others intrigues me. I am moved and motivated by other artists who do this.
I was naturally drawn to the Impressionists’ style of art while in school and continue the challenge of how light affects its surroundings in my artwork. I prefer using pastel art strokes and layering of color techniques. Although my passion is for pastel I often use oil and turpenoid as an underpainting wash to enhance the pastel medium and occasionally leave some of the wash showing in my final painting.
The inspiration from learning about and doing art has been an altering experience in many areas of my life. I cannot help but want to continue to learn and to share this with others.
