Colleen Halford - Ceramics
"I took my first ceramics class in the fall of 2019 and fell in love with it instantly. Wheel throwing is something I have always been drawn to: when people would ask what I was going to do when my kids were out of school I would jokingly say “I’m getting a pottery wheel” even though I had never tried it. When I finally had the opportunity to take a class, I took to it immediately and haven’t looked back.
While I am new to ceramics, I am not new to design. I am an Architectural CAD designer by day, and it shows in the precision of my trimming and the feel of my work, even for someone new to the craft. From the beginning, I knew how much each piece should weigh just from imagining it as a CAD render. I also learned to sew and cook at a very young age. By the time I was in High School I was altering and adding to patterns to customize dresses for myself. I find myself using tools from my kitchen to work with clay, because it’s very similar. When handbuilding and altering my pots, I use many of the same patterning and tool skills. And just like kneading bread, you can feel when the clay is right. My personal style is still evolving as I learn new techniques. I tend toward clean lines with vibrant colors, metallic and textured glaze. My favorite things to make are bottles, jars and big bowls.
