Carolyn Owen Sommer - Painting & Assemblage/Collage
Both vocation and voice come from the Latin VOX. I find a voice in my vocation of art making.
My background in watercolor and my education as a potter, both mediums requiring patience, have taken a back seat to the immediacy of collage for this body of work. Trips to Vancouver Island in the last couple years inspired an urgency to get it on canvas while it was still fresh. The Thai, Indian, and Japanese paper were exciting tools. Several books on the life and travels of Canadian artist Emily Carr were influential as well, which brings me to the other themes in my work: being a woman, and appreciating nature. Flowers appear in my work, because I love them. I know I’ve taken a jaunt into abstraction this time around, but it was a delight, so I hope you can feel the joy. |
