In its 3rd year Downtown Springfield Inc’s (DSI) image and design council, in partnership with the Springfield Art Association (SAA), are taking the Art Alley Mural to a new level!
We are looking for 7 artists or artist teams to compete in a 1 day mural competition that will end in an Art Alley party.
DEADLINE: July 31, 2019
Competition: Saturday, September 14 from 10 AM and to 7 PM
Art Party: Saturday, September 14 from 5:30 – 9 PM (Admission Fee)
Rain Date: Sunday, September 15

Juror Awards:
A panel of art professionals will select the artist awards.
Cash prizes will be distributed for the following awards
1st Place $250, 2nd Place $150, 3rd Place $75
Popular Choice Awards:
Popular choice awards will be determined by the public at a cost of $1/vote.
2 cash prizes at $50 each will be given for the following:

Selection criteria: Artists/teams will be chosen by a panel of jurors based on strength of portfolio, design of proposed mural, originality, and adherence to the competition guidelines.

How the competition works:
- Each artist/artist team will have an 8’ x 8’ space to complete their mural.
- Artists are free to make the mural their own. There will be no overall theme and in the spirit of the Art Alley. We encourage artists bring their own style to the mural. The public will be invited to watch the murals throughout the day as they unfold.
Artist/teams will receive:
- Free admission to the Art Alley Party for themselves and 1 guest.
- Free paint provided in primary colors plus black and white.
- Up to $75 to spend to purchase unique colors or supplies needed for their project.
- Lunch will be provided by our sponsors.
- Artist areas will be prepared in advance with a white background.
Eligibility:
- 18 years or older
- Live within 25 miles of Springfield
- Emerging artists are welcome to apply

Rules:
- Artist(s) MAY purchase additional paint colors from the paint supply budget. Full guidelines will be provided by competition officials on what is acceptable for use once applicants are selected.
- All products must be for exterior use.
- Artist(s) will need to provide their own supplied for application including but not limited to: paint rollers, brushes, paint trays, buckets, rags, towels, ladders, and/or step stools.
- Artist(s) MAY NOT USE any form of spray paint or apply paint with a sprayer. This is for the safety of other artists and observers.
- Artist(s) MAY NOT begin drawing or painting on the mural surface prior to the competition start time.
- Artist(s) MAY bring pre-drawn templates, project a drawing onto the surface, or use stencils of their own creation.
- Artist(s) MAY set up their art space between 9 – 10 AM, but may not begin any work on the mural surface until 10 am.
- Artist MUST complete any work on the mural surface by 7 PM, no exceptions.
- All designs and supplies must remain within the artist’s designated space.
- All work and designs must be original by the artists including any source inspiration photographs. Any artist found to be in violation of copyright laws will be disqualified from the competition and have their mural removed.
- Artwork must be appropriate for a public audience, cannot contain logo, images of violence, nudity, drugs, or death.
Submission Requirements:

- Individual Jpeg images of the following
- Artist head shot that can be used for event promotion. The formality for this photo if up for you.
- Draft drawing of proposed mural
- 1 PDF document that contains the following:
- Page 1: Artist(s) Name, Gender, Preferred Pronouns, Address, Phone, Email, Website, Social Media Handles and 3 references.
- If you are submitting as a team, one artist must be designated at the team lead/contact and be responsible to fill out the information in the submission form. All artists' information should be listed in the PDF application.
- Page 2: Draft drawing of proposed mural
- Page 3: Artist statement about the proposed mural
- Page 4: Artist bio statement (max 250 words) AND General artist statement (max 250 words)
- Page 5: 5 images of sample artwork produce within that last 3 years
- Last Page: Artist CV or List of any past exhibitions or public art/mural projects. Please, be sure to include location of exhibition or public projects.
- Page 1: Artist(s) Name, Gender, Preferred Pronouns, Address, Phone, Email, Website, Social Media Handles and 3 references.
