3D Printing Summer Camp Resources

Software Needs:

Software Needs for 3D Printing Class (all free):
  1. Create a free account at www.tinkercad.com for the CAD program (Computer Aided Design which is used to make a 3D model).
  2. Go to www.flashforge.com to download the free slicer program (which tells the 3D printer how to create the model):
    1. Open either Safari or Google Chrome browser (the program does not work on Firefox).
    2. Go to the Support option on the top menu section at top right, then click on Download Center from the drop-down menu.
    3. In left column, click on FlashPrint Download.
    4. In the main column, select FlashForge 4.2.0 in your computer version, i.e. mac or win64 and download accordingly.
    5. From your download folder, find the flashprint.pkg installer and launch the program (usually by double-clicking it).
    6. Follow the prompts in the directions with the following IMPORTANT tips:
i.You many need to change your security setting to allow a download from an unknown application.
ii.Make sure you pick English as the language (verses Chinese)!!!
  1. Find Flashprint in your applications and launch program.
  2. After launching, Select “Flashforge Dreamer” as the machine type.
i.Additional tip:
  1. A Polar Cloud Ad pops up typically on first launch, 
  2. Click the box in lower righthand pop-up window stating, do not show this message again,
  3. Close out window with x in upper righthand corner of pop-up window.
  1. Sign-up through https://bit.ly/SAA3DCamp for a time to come in to the Art Association to have one-on-one time on the 3D printer to get hands-on experience.  There are two printers.  This is optional depending upon your comfort and can be scheduled at a later date when Illinois is fully open.  The following precautions will be used:
    1. The only people in the Condell Studio will be the instructor and two students at a time.
    2. Each printer will be placed over 6ft apart with a ring marked 6 ft from the printers to identify where observation/teaching will take place at a safe distance.
    3. Machines and surfaces will be disinfected.
    4. Everyone must wear masks at all times.
    5. Proper hand-washing and use of disinfecting spray will be used.
    6. No child or adult can be exhibiting COVID19 symptoms.
    7. Parents must wear masks at Drop-off and Pick-Up through door A (near Buffalo) and must wait 6 ft from outside the door.

3D Guidelines and Safety Rules:

3D Printing Guidelines 
  • The 3D printers may be used only for lawful purposes and may not be used to create materials that are: 
    • Prohibited by local, state or federal law.
    • Unsafe, harmful, or pose an immediate threat to the well-being of others. 
    • Not be used to create weapons of any kind.
    • Obscene, violent, or otherwise inappropriate.
    • In violation of intellectual property rights. For example, the printers may not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent or trademark protection.
  • The SAA reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.
  • The SAA provides computers with design software however any 3D drafting software may be used to create a design if the file can be converted to a Flashforge Dreamer file format. Designs are also available from file-sharing databases such as Thingiverse.com and Shapeways.com.  
  • No model will be started which cannot be completed during SAA operating hours. 
  • Staff will provide a best estimate of the time required to complete a print; however, it is difficult to estimate exact times. Completed models may be picked up by the submitter at the front desk during open hours.
  • Items printed from the SAA’s 3D printers must be picked up by the submitter within 30 days. 
  • Procedures governing use of the 3D printers are subject to change.
 
3D Printer Safety

  • Do NOT touch print nozzle! It is blister worthy hot.
  • Do NOT touch print-bed platform, let it cool down before removing the model.
  • Door must be closed during printing.
  • Top cover must be on during printing.
  • Do NOT reach into the 3D printer when the print is operating.
  • DO monitor the start of the print to ensure it is properly adhering to the print-bed platform properly. Cancel the print if necessary.
  • ONLY use the provided spatula tool to remove the model from the print bed.  Keep fingers behind the direction of applied force.  Take care not to gauge or scrape the bed.
