Thursdays September 29 - November 17: 1 - 4PM [Poppy Vincent] Learn the ancient technique of "Lost Wax Casting". In this class you will learn to make a wax model that will ultimately become an article of jewelry cast in sterling silver. This class will cover how to make an item in wax and then finish the resulting metal piece using saws, files and polishing equipment. We will explore the two most common materials used for wax working. These are "Hard Wax" which can be carved and filed. This material usually comes in blocks and tubes, it lends itself to sculptural or more contemporary designs. The other wax is often referred to as "Soft Wax". This wax comes in the form of sheet and wire. It is more malleable and is easily manipulated with your hands or a hot tool. Commercial waxes are also available that can be altered to your liking and work especially well for the person who basically wants to just learn the casting process alone. Students will receive individual instruction and help with their design goals.
Supplies: Silver kit will need to be purchased on the first day of class. All other materials will be provided by SAA.
