Dave Shaw was a visual artist, educator and theatrical designer. Born in Moline, Illinois he attended and graduated from Illinois State University with a BS in Art Education K-12 certification. Dave was a comprehensive Art major (both major and minor were in art).
His first teaching assignment was teaching art, K-12 for the Chandlerville School District in Chandlerville, Illinois. for 6 years. Dave then taught art and drama for 35 years with the Rochester School District in Rochester, Illinois before retiring in 2018. Dave also worked as a scenographer for the Springfield Muni Opera, Springfield Theater Center, Over the Moon Productions. Hoogland Center for the Arts, The Legacy Theater, Edwards Place, Theater in the Park, Rochester High School, Opera Theater of Springfield, and Chandlerville High School. He has also served as a board member and chair for the Scholastic Art Awards Mid-Central Illinois Region, board member and art advisor of The Old Capital Art Fair, founding member of Over The Moon Productions and board member and OMA Instructor at Springfield Art Association.
Dave's passion for artistic expression started at a very young age, creating with whatever was available. Dave had a love of color, detail and texture that he expressed in his art, be it visual art, scenic design or costume design. Dave worked with a diverse range of mediums, both 2 and 3D. In his 2D mixed media work he would use a combination of alcohol inks, acrylic paint, colored pencil, markers, papers, printmaking, fibers, found objects, metal and resin. His work was a fluid and detailed abstraction inspired by nature.
In his passing, his family wished to donate his collection to both Springfield Art Association and the Hoogland Center for the Arts so that all who loved Dave could have a chance to enjoy and acquire his art and the art he collected.
