YOUTH CLASSES

This course will cover the principles of working with clay under the theme of an OCTOPUS’S GARDEN. All pieces made will be water aquarium safe. Your child will learn proper tool usage and clay studio etiquette while having fun with clay and glazes. Please encourage your artist to ALWAYS wear washable play clothes, as students will get messy. AGE GROUP 5 – 11 (Must be currently in Kindergarten).

WHEELS, WEDGING & FUN! (20)

Young adults will learn the fundamentals of throwing on the potters’ wheel and some hand building. One-on-one instruction gives students the opportunity to create pottery in their own personal style. Traditional, new and unusual glazing techniques will be explored. All skill levels welcome. Returning students will be instructed in additional techniques & projects.

AGE GROUP 12 – 16.

FELTED CLUTCH PURSE (30)

Every girl needs a good designer clutch! You will make your own unique and stylish fashion statement to wear with your wardrobe. Given a variety of wool fibers, threads, strings, wool yarn, and fabric scraps, we will wet-felt a clutch purse. It’s the perfect accessory to match with any pair of heels. AGE GROUP 13 +to 102!

INSTRUCTOR: TERRY JONES

Your favorite place in the world is just at your fingertips! This is a fun workshop to do with your children or grandchildren. You will design and sew a soft, picturesque landscape out of pre-felted fabrics. Bring photo of your favorite landscape to the studio. AGE GROUP 7+to 102.

MAKE PAPER, TURN IT INTO A BOOK (50)

One week we will make paper, the next we will make that paper into a book. We will make the paper from cotton fibers and make two different book structures, the Japanese Stab binding  and the Codex with exposed stitching. This class is appropriate for Students 7+ who have strong fine motor skills.

FUSION! MIXED MEDIA ART (60)

Welcome to Fusion, where we mix and mingle different art mediums into one project. Turn trash to treasure with mixed media sculptures, and combine text with portraiture. We will study the traditional art methods of painting, drawing and sculpture, but they will be fused with found objects to expand your creativity! AGES 7– 12

Mary Brooks graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in Art Education.  This past year, she taught Kindergarten through Fourth grade. Her goal in teaching at the SAA is to create an exciting and stimulating environment, where we can learn about the wonderful world of art.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE!

 

We will be holding a series of workshops throughout the sessions at both the Henson Robinson Zoo and in the SAA studios.

The kids will create fun art that will be permanently installed on the outside of

the otter and alligator habitats!
