"What's in a Name?: The Signature as Gesture, or Witness?"
January 28
• 12 Noon

An artwork is created and signed by its artist or creator, but what does that signature mean or represent? Is it a mere mark on a canvas, or consecrating the scene within? Katie Rasmussen, Education Coordinator of the SAA, will present works from various time periods and examine the artist’s signature, as well as their work within its particular realm of art history. Her hypotheses will include artworks by Jan van Eyck, Michelangelo, Norman Rockwell, and Jackson Pollock.

February 25
• 12 Noon

Rosina Neginsky, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at U.I.S.. will discuss Rogier van der Weyden, the most influential painter of the 15th century and the first to depict real people with real emotions.  He towered over his compatriots, known as the Flemish Primitives.
