Each year, the SAA Gallery of Art hosts four to six exhibitions featuring national, regional and local artists.  The art pieces for these exhibitions are chosen in a variety of methods and the exhibits may include or be specific to any medium of fine arts or fine crafts.

The exhibitions range from the traditional to the contemporary and also draw from the SAA permanent collection.  The gallery is free and open to the public during business and library hours.  Nellie Knopf: A Life in Full Color, The Modern Landscape and Bearing Witness: The Art of Preston Jackson represent some previous exhibitions.  Artwork by SAA students (ages 6 to 90 ) and faculty members are also exhibited throughout the year.

The SAA frequently collaborates on exhibits with local organizations such as the Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield and the Illinois Chapter of the American Association of Architects.  Our walls have also been graced with the artwork of personalities such as Springfield Mayor Tim Davlin, Representative Raymond Poe and Sangamon County Sheriff Neil Williamson!

The Gallery of Art is open Monday through Friday 10 am to 5 pm and on Saturday 10 am to 3 pm.  There is no admission fee.

Information for Exhibiting Artsits

The Springfield Art Association hosts several juried exhibitions throughout the year.  If you would like to be placed on the mailing list for exhibition opportunities, please e-mail the Curator of Collections at collections@springfieldart.org.  In the e-mail, include you contact information and the media that you work in.  You may also check this website for current call for entries.

If you are interested in a solo exhibition opportunity, please send your resume and examples of your work to Angie Dunfee, Executive Director, 700 N. 4th Street, Springfield, IL 62702.  The Springfield Art Association sets its exhibition schedule a year in advance.  We are now considering work for 2009.

Gallery Discovery Programs

Gallery Discovery Programs are tailored programs relating to the current Springfield Art Association (SAA) gallery exhibition. Educators should contact the SAA to schedule a time for their students to view the exhibition. The facilitator of the Gallery Discovery Programs will talk with the educator and create a gallery experience that meets their needs. For example, in a kindergarten class, students may be learning about the elements of art. Their gallery visit may include a brief discussion of line, shape, color, texture and space and then students might explore the gallery and find all of the those elements in the art work. The same concept can be used for a high school class, but on a different level. High school art students can engage in discussion and describe, analyze or interpret the work in the gallery.

To schedule a tour for your school or community group, contact Amanda Gleason, Curator of Collections at (217) 523-2631 ext. 205 or collections@springfieldart.org
